In her book, Why Dirt is Good, Mary Ruebush highlights some interesting ideas about strengthening immunity. She says that the human immune system needs exercise to become strong. This is a process as immunity is something that can be cultivated and developed and this is essential in this day and age.
What is an Immune System
The human immune system is comprised of several factors:
- Skin is a physical barrier that keeps microorganisms out of the body.
- Mucosal surfaces are found in body orifices and secrete mucus. The role of mucus is to coat invading microorganisms and slide them out of the body.
- Chemical defences such as stomach acid kill many germs. Tears wash away microorganisms and tears and saliva contain antibacterial compounds that offer a level of protection.
- White blood cells play an important role in the immune system. There are several types of white blood cells and they work together to overcome invasions of germs.
How to Strengthen an Immune System
An immune system is constantly developing and it is important to allow the process to continue on an ongoing basis. There are a number of ways to encourage this to happen:
- White blood cells multiply in response to a challenge by germs. Each exposure strengthens the immune response to that particular germ. This process needs to begin in early childhood to form an efficient immune system in later life. Part of exposure is allowing a child to play in the garden, pet animals and put things in his mouth. Obviously parents must prevent a child from doing foolish things but normal play is acceptable and helpful.
- There is much talk about superbugs these days and people try and protect themselves by using antibacterial soap and washing up liquid, as well as hand sanitizers and antibacterial wipes. These things weaken the immune system and are not that effective against superbugs.
- Antimicrobial medications such as antibiotics, antivirals, antifungals and antiparasites are often used unnecessarily and weaken a person’s immunity. Mary Ruebush suggests allowing the body a day or two extra to try and overcome the infection before resorting to medicines.
- Keep vaccinations up to date as these work with natural immunity to protect against dangerous diseases.
Human immunity is a complex protection system that includes skin, mucus membranes, chemical defences and white blood cells. It can be strengthened by allowing children to explore their environment, avoiding the use of antibacterial soaps and cleansers and only using antimicrobial medication when essential. A strong immune system is the best protection against sickness and diseases.
